The Data Literacy, Skills & Capabilities course has been specifically designed for public sector business professionals and managers without specialist data knowledge or skills. The course assumes no prior technical knowledge from participants about data principles, concepts or software.
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered as a bundled course, comprising three workshops. Modules are delivered remotely in 4-hour blocks with content optimised for effective remote delivery.
Part I: Introduction to Essential Data SkillsA practical guide to understand data and use data to answer questions and make decisions
In this interactive, practical workshop participants learn how people make decisions using data, the language of data and how to apply a simple, structured process that shows you how to answer questions or make decisions with data. Participants will also learn to ask business-relevant data questions, obtain relevant data, make sense of the data, draw conclusions supported by data and present results to stakeholders in a way that promotes action. Participants apply the structured process using real-world problems they select from their workplace.
Part II: Introduction to Data VisualisationLearn to how use data visualisation to explore data and communicate insights
In this practical interactive workshop, participants will learn how to create data visualisations they can use to explore data to find valuable insights, and accurately and clearly communicate those insights to decision makers. Participants will learn and apply data visualisation principles and best practices based academic research and industry experience using the data visualisation design process. Participants also have the opportunity to bring existing data visualisations on which they can receive feedback from the experienced facilitator.
Part III: Introduction to Data StorytellingLearn to how to communicate recommendations from data in a compelling way
In this practical, interactive workshop participants build on their knowledge of data visualisation principles and best practices by learning the importance of using narrative structure and storytelling techniques to enhance the way they present their data visualisations to stakeholders. Participants will work in small groups to prepare and deliver a data story presentation, and receive constructive feedback on their presentation content and delivery from the experienced facilitator.

Steve Remington is Principal Consultant and Founder of Minerra. Steve is a consultant, architect, advisor and trainer with more than 25 years of expertise in analytics, business intelligence, data warehouse and decision support projects. His background includes seven years of academic research and teaching at Melbourne Business School, Monash University and Latrobe University.
Steve has worked on analytics projects in a range of industries and countries. Notable projects include analytics to optimise oil extraction at the world’s two largest olive groves, workforce tracking and prediction for one of the world’s largest gas infrastructure projects, and an agency-wide recruitment analytics system for a large US government agency.
Steve holds a Masters of Business Information Systems (Honours) with first-class honours and dux of his graduating year from Monash University, a Graduate Diploma of Total Quality Management and a Bachelor of Business from the University of Newcastle. He has published peer-reviewed papers on the use of analytics in organisations to support decision making.
Steve also volunteers his time as the global Director of Curriculum for She Loves Data, a social enterprise that inspires women to become active contributors to an increasingly data-driven world.
