Dean Knudson is a deputy secretary at the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. He is currently leading reforms to transform Australia’s national environmental laws, transition Australia to a circular economy, ensure the safe management of chemicals, and enhance biodiversity conservation.

Dean joined the department in September 2022, having previously delivered reforms on natural capital, environmental regulation and species protection for the New South Wales Government.

During his 30-year public service career in both Australia and Canada, Dean’s principal focus has been on legislative, regulatory and market reforms for the environment.

Dean holds graduate qualifications in economics and conflict resolution.
