My name is Devon Cuimara, and I am a Nyungar from the South-west of Western Australia. Ngalak ngaank nitja budjar – This land is our mother. My mother’s moort (family) are the Collards from Wadjuk and Balardong in Boorloo (Perth). My father’s moort (family), the Walley’s, are from the Pinjar (wetlands) and Elaap (Leschenault Estuary), and the Cuimara’s of the Yuet, Yellonga, and Yamatji Amangu skin groups are from the Greater North Midlands to New Norcia, situated on the banks of the Moore River in the Shire of Victoria Plains.
Currently, I am a guest on Nyiyaparli Parna (Land) in the Pilbara region of WA, representing the Martu yirna (Aboriginal men) of the Great Sandy Desert, who are perpetrators of violence. I have the yuwajula (permission) from the yatilykata (elders) of Pitjikala and Manyjilyjarra, Martu (Aboriginal people), to carry out healing and well-being work with yirna.
