Dr Michael Barton is the Executive Principal of Djarragun College, an independent Indigenous boarding and day school in Far North Queensland. With extensive experience across school leadership, governance, and academic research, Michael brings a strong, evidence-informed approach to educational improvement, student wellbeing, and organisational sustainability.
Michael has worked in senior leadership roles across complex educational settings and has supervised students at two Australian universities. His work is grounded in a deep commitment to equity, high expectations, and culturally responsive education, particularly for Indigenous young people. He has led the implementation of whole-school frameworks that integrate trauma-informed practice, relationship-based approaches, and explicit teaching and learning strategies to improve student engagement, attendance, and outcomes.
As Executive Principal, Michael oversees strategic planning, compliance, and major capital and workforce initiatives, including the expansion of boarding facilities and the development of future-focused education pathways. He works closely with Boards, community leaders, families, and external partners to ensure the College remains financially sustainable, legally compliant, and true to its values.
Michael is known for his direct, principled leadership style, his focus on data-driven decision-making, and his strong advocacy for staff capability, wellbeing, and accountability in the service of student success.
